20,00 lei

The garden yucca (Yucca filamentosa) is a very special species as a habitus: very short stem, made up of linearly lanceolate leaves, thick, up to 80cm long, rigid, straight, with filamentous edges, forming a large rosette, from the middle of which, in July-August, flowering stems 1.5-2m high appear. They end in large panicles (up to 1m) with numerous yellowish-white flowers, similar to large bells (6cm).
The garden yucca is a species resistant to frost and drought, it prefers warm, light, calcareous, permeable soils. It loves light but also tolerates semi-shade (it does not bloom). It is a species resistant to pollution.
Solitary specimens are planted, in groups of 3-5 plants, in rocks or in (pots).

Garden yucca (Yucca filamentosa) is a perennial plant of North American origin, also known as “yucca filamentosa”, “Adam’s sword” or “garden lights”. It is valued for its ornamental appearance and its resistance to harsh environmental conditions.

Detailed Description:

General appearance:

  • Yucca filamentosa has a bush shape, with no apparent stem, with long, narrow leaves arranged in a rosette.
  • The leaves are dark green, rigid and pointed, with thin edges and white, twisted filaments that give them a distinctive decorative appearance.

Leaves:

  • The leaves can reach lengths of 30-90 cm and widths of 2-5 cm.
  • They are rigid, lanceolate and have rough edges, with thin and twisted filaments.

Flowers:

  • Yucca filamentosa produces tall flower stems, which can reach up to 1.5-2.5 meters in height.
  • The flowers are creamy-white, campanulate, and appear in dense clusters at the tip of the flower stem.
  • The flowering period is usually in summer, from late spring to mid-summer.

Fruit:

  • The fruits are dry, ovoid capsules containing numerous black seeds.

Planting Filamentous Yucca:

Location:

  • It prefers sunny places, but can also tolerate semi-shade.
  • It needs well-drained soil, as it does not tolerate excess water.

Soil:

  • Preferably a sandy or stony soil, well drained.
  • The pH of the soil can range from slightly acidic to slightly alkaline.

Planting:

  1. Soil preparation: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root bale and the depth of the bale.
  2. Location: Place the plant in the pit so that the crown is at ground level or slightly above it.
  3. Filling the pit: Fill the pit with soil and gently tamp down to remove air.
  4. Watering: Watering should be moderate until the plant stabilizes. After that, Yucca filamentosa tolerates drought very well.
  5. Mulching: You can apply a thin layer of mulch to help maintain moisture and control weeds, but avoid excessive mulching.

Aftercare:

  • Watering: After stabilization, Yucca filamentosa requires watering only during prolonged periods of drought.
  • Fertilization: It usually does not require fertilization, but you can apply a balanced fertilizer in spring to stimulate growth.
  • Cutting: Remove any dry or damaged leaves and cut off the flower stems after the flowers have wilted.
  • Winter protection: Yucca filamentosa is cold-hardy, but in areas with extremely cold winters, it can be covered with a layer of mulch or straw for extra protection.

Yucca filamentosa is a robust and versatile plant, ideal for rock gardens, borders, or as a solitary plant. Due to its exotic appearance and low maintenance, it is very popular among gardeners who want attractive and hardy plants.
