General description

Trachelospermum jasminoides, also known as star jasmine, false jasmine or climbing jasmine, is a woody perennial native to East Asia (China, Japan). Although it is not part of the genus Jasminum, it is called ‘jasmine’ because of its intensely fragrant white flowers, similar to those of true jasmine. It is a popular ornamental plant because of its elegant appearance, strong fragrance and ability to quickly cover pergolas, walls or fences.

  • Height: 3 – 6 m (up to 10 m in ideal conditions)
  • Width: 2 – 4 m
  • Foliage: Persistent, dark green, glossy, may turn reddish in winter in colder areas
  • Flowers: White, stellate, 2-3 cm in diameter, strongly fragrant, flowering in clusters
  • Flowering time: May – September
  • Stem: Flexible, fast-growing, with a tendency to curl on supports
